The Plague Doctor

A few Fridays ago I was sitting home sick and ended up watching the new Beauty and the Beast. In it, there is a scene where Beast transports Belle to the home that her parents were in when they were in Paris. Beast picks up a plague mask, and the two realize that the realize Belle’s father took her out of the city because her mother was dying of the plague.

I then went down an internet rabbit hole learning more about plague masks. They were, in essence, part of the first hazmat suits. Doctors would wear masks with long noses to hide heavily scented herbs and flowers in the nose, to mask the smell of the sick. They also wore hats and head to toe cloaks to keep the illness from touching them. I also uncovered an amazing pattern to make a leather one, resulting in the idea for this little painting.
